A shot of Kenneth Clarke the former Conservative Chancellor of the Exchequer who is still making his voice heard from the backbenches and influencing political debate. An ardent europhile Clarke is a sworn opponent of Brexit and believes the country has made a grave error in deciding to leave the European Union. He along with other senior Conservatives such as Michael Hestletine still have weight behind their political pronouncements. The current generation of Conservatives with the exception of Boris Johnson have not managed to fill the shoes of these “Big beasts” in terms of their public presence or appeal. In an era of profound political instability it may take the emergence of new characters of substance and strength to seize the political zeitgeist.
